When did you last have your car professionally SERVICED??? And, how many miles on your car??

I imagine that you have already changed your timing belt, maybe twice?? A misaligned camshaft is a pretty big problem.

Stupid question I think but if oil got on timing belt could that be cause the problem

Michael, no question is stupid.... I do believe that you're not supposed to have oil on the timing belt... Oil , like any lubricant can cause the belt to shift out of alignment and slip... That probably is a big factor.... My question is how did oil get on your timing belt??? I would bring this car to a professional mechanic.

I imagine you have a professional mechanic who has worked on your car??? Sometimes it's better to get this work done by a professional... IF your car is in really nice condition, the price to get it fixed correctly is worth it. Your car is pretty old at 17 years, you might consider retirement soon...Or maybe in a few years... The last car I kept to 20 years really cost me a disproportionate amount in the last couple of years...
