Why would a foresters engine develop a knock with semi synthetic oil replaced 500kms ago ? The car has never overheated and the oil light did not come on ?!

No reason unless the oil level or oil pressure dropped too low.

If it's too thin it might not cushion between the bearings etc enough and allow it to contact the cyl head. If it's too thick of oil? Not sure.. I'd check #4 for the tap as it's most likely to Be starved for oil.

Thanks guys, I am dismantling the engine to find out more , oil has a good EP factor so should not be the problem. Oil pressure light did not come on either ?
