I would search around the web looking for good modifications. The easy ones to start with are intake and exhaust. You can gain a little bit, but beware that HP claims tend to be higher than reality.

k&n cold air induction 15-20hp gain (tested) and gives lurrvly exhaust note, upgraded exhaust system as nick suggested. superchips visit, re-map,if u have the 3.2s you can go for a variable nitrous oxide kit then you will suprise people!! the 2.7 does not take the nitrous too well after a while of use! but starts from £400! 45bhp+.... great cars either way....

if your in the market, get an 08/09 Boxster. I test drive one, and its freaking awesome!!! (might get it...)

try a titanium, open exhaust and ice box cold air intake (air chiller). also, try a plug 'n play unit like super chips or have it done at a Porsche tuner shop. those are cheap "bolt on" go fast parts. try those before getting into the internals of the motor.
