Question type: Maintenance & Repair

own a. 2000 Pontiac grand am v6 pretty sure it
3.4... Driving like any other day when the car being
to slowly gain speed at first I though it was my lead
foot so I removed my foot no help.. Not going
down any kind of hill that would normally cause a
vehicle to gain speed... I tried breaking very little
help but as soon as I let off the break it would
continue to gain speed .. As my car is accelerating
on it own traffic kinda heavy coming up on a red
light while still gaining traveling down a four lane
reaching an intersection... Won't let me put the car
n neutral just trying to turn key n shut Down the car
it refused to allow key to turn...locked up
completely...laying on horn scared to death of what
I just knew was going to happen major car
crash/pile up when outta nowhere the car drops
speed quickly like the break was being gently but
Rather quickly pressed (not by me) in matter of sec
of impact... I stopped so close to the vehicle in
front of where I came to a stop that a sheet on reg
notebook paper wouldnt fit between them... I had it
towed home n been parked ever since which has
been alil over a yr... Was told it was caused BC of
cruise control modulator need in replaced but I
was using my cruise control when this death scare
occurred.

Yep, pretty scary. Happened to me once on an 84 Grand Prix while I was going around the Washington Beltway. Glad there were no traffic lights to deal with and mine disengaged by putting the car in neutral and pulling to the shoulder. Shut the car down & waited a few minutes. Started right back up and the problem never came back. I think your advice is correct. It is a cruise control problem even though it was not engaged at the time this happened to you. It is a pretty cheap fix and it should not happen again once the new modulator is installed.
