Was it running hot before changing the water pump ? Maybe the thermostat is stuck in the closed position or air is in system and needs to be bleed.

It was running a little toward the hot side but not in the red heard a clattering noise going to town got off interstate it shut off after cooling no water in radiator but some in reservoir started it back up hand stayed warm had it towed home since replacing water pump it has a skip like a toweled plug
