2005 Pontiac Vibe air conditioner not working well

Asked by rrice Nov 28, 2007 at 08:45 AM about the 2005 Pontiac Vibe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The air conditioner in my 05 Vibe barely cools the car off on a hot day.  I have taken it to the dealer and they say it works per GM specs.   I took it to an independent repair shop and they said it is working fine but is undersized for the car and their is nothing they can do.  I live in the Pacific Northwest, a hot day here is 85.  Is there anything that can be done to improve the AC in this car?

I would have them check the amount of coolant in the system if they haven't already done so. Working per specs doesn't mean that your system is properly "charged".

i am certified in auto aircondition so i can help, your air uses r134a have pressure checked should be 40 to 45 psi.the thing with 134 is when ideling or driving in sloewr trafic it dose not cool like it would on open highway.a easy fix to this and we have done plenty of this, take it to your mechanic have them vacume system down, and replace with frezze 12plus recomended oil for compressor, you will feel the difference, have mechanic tag it changed over to frezze 12.

i have an 03 vibe that has not cooled very well since i've had it, has 44000 miles on it ;leaking evap replaced by dealer a while back but ac is still marginal. I just put in a new aftermarket compressor and it still performs poorly.Service manual calls for only a 50 degree discharge temp with a 30 pound back pressure with the ambient around 70 degrees. when its 90 degrees outside the specs call for a 57 degree discharge temp and a 46 pound back pressure. Pretty piss poor if you should ask me. the heat cool system in the vibe is totally different than the matrix and apparently GM engineers once again took a good thing and screwed it up!!!!!!!
