preaty much every single engine is an interferance engine in audis and vw's You break a timeing belt you get a big paperweight. This is why you are supposed to keep up with regular maintence on these cars. Proper replacement times are at 90,000km for timing belt water pump pulleys and thermostat.

Thanks for that. This is a customer vehicle that has only traveled 82000Km. but passed the 4 year mark

well the engine can be mad scientised but requires new or rebuilt heads and valves and if they are lucky it won't need the pistons taken out and repaired. Overal would be cheaper to jsut grab a used engine or bring it to audi and complain that the belt broke before it was supposed to be changed and that the parts were faulty.
