i have a 98 es 300 and it has a lil trouble shifting when i take off in drive but if i shift from first to second it does fine just revs up high when going to third or fourth

I suspect transmission trouble, it's not normal for automatic transmissions to have increased engine noises UNLESS you're driving a CVT transmission!

I know this thread is 3 years old, but for other people that have the same symptoms I will give my two cents. If it has problems when in drive but does fine when you manually shift it, I believe the shift solenoids are getting old/weak. Replace those and your problems should go away.
