If you feather the gas pedal will it stay running? If so I would suspect dirty/faulty idle air control valve or dirty throttle plate.

when I first start it up and it does start up and I give it gas it will run but then die off

Is your check engine light on? If so have the codes read. Also check for vacuum leaks.

Could it be a fuel pump or fuel filter issue? I'd have the codes read at an AutoZone or Pep Boys for starters.
