Wont shift out of neutral and acts like third gear

My 92 Ranger (2.3L 5 speed) wont shift out of neutral and acts like third gear. What do I do?

Not sure if this applies to yours but sounds like the selector cable from your shifter could be broke. My car did the same thing and it had a broke cable. Have someone change the gears while your watch the linkage at the trans. One cable is the selector and the other is the shifter. The selector has to move for the trans to shift into 1, 2, 5 and reverse. 3 and 4 the selector is in a neutral position so even if cable is broke it will go into those gears. The shifter cable will move for all gear to ingage. Hope this helps
