How do you change a transmission screen, on a 1996 Mercury Sable?

Drain the transmission fluid. Drop the pan (maybe 18) bolts, think the piece we are after is on the intake for the fluid, must be after the filter, could be before the filter. Why the transmission screen instead of filter? who knows?
