blinking red light on dashboard

There is a small red light blinking on and off on the dashboard, near the
speedometer, when the car is turned off and locked. I have no idea what that
is.

It is telling you your system is armed and ready when the car is in park, locked and turned off.

That's the security, or anti-theft, system. Flashing means it's actively protecting your car.
