Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I changed my oil in my 2016 Subaru Forester and
now it’s running rough. I used 0w/20. What did I do
wrong?

What state do you live in? It maybe coincidental but either you have bad gas but I can't see how changing oil and filter can cause your car to run rough unless you pulled out one of the spark cables or spilled fluids on one of the coil packs

Hey guys. Thanks for the response. Oil filter is back on, level of oil is good. Seems to be good gas. The check engine light is on and electrical power steering. The car starts up just fine. When you put the car in gear it seems to shake a little on acceleration and Boggs down.

On some vehicles, if you leave the oil filler cap loose or unseated they will idle rough and light the check engine light due to unmetered air entering the system. When I had a BMW Z4, that is exactly what happened. Not sure if this applies to a Subaru, but it is worth checking out.

Have the trouble codes read and post them here but this sounds like a misfire.

Since you have a warranty I would take it to a Subie dealer.

Yeah I dont think it's the oil cap. It's can only be 4 things to shut down a car. Fuel, air, timing or current. Pull the fuel line from the engine and make sure you have sufficient fuel pressure, then check your fuel filter and then spray a little fuel in intake to see if it starts up. If it does it's your fuel

The reason why I asked what state you live in is because your state has cold spells. Now I realize why you have zero weight. But if you pour a SMALL amount of fuel in the intake and still acts same way then we can move to step 2. Checking coils by disconnecting each coil one by one and the one with the least effect will be the fault.

So the Seeburg mechanic called back saying the transmission fluid is dark and he’s talking about a possible flush. Also that the Subaru is signaling for overheating but being idel for 15+ minutes the oil temp is only 91’. I guess I should be taking this to a Subaru dealership.

I would not flush it unless Subaru recommends it. I would change the CVT fluid but have not heard of a CVT flush. How many miles on the car?

I suppose a failing CVT could feel like a rough running engine to a person not familiar with engines.

35k on the car. I have bumper to bumper 75k miles on it. The reason I took it to Seeburg instead of a Subaru dealer is because I was afraid I messed something up changing the oil.

Subaru extended the CVT warranty out to 100,000 miles because of all the problems. Good luck Nathan but I do think this is a dealer issue and hopefully it will all be covered under warranty.

Just so you know Subaru considers the CVT fluid "lifetime" which is BS. People should have it changed at least every 50k miles but in your case the dark fluid tells me something is wrong.

Thanks for your input, it’s really appreciated!! Dealership is the best option. Thanks again everyone!

Your 2.5i DOHC does NOT have spark plug wires in the conventional unified coil sense, but a modern design with individual coils at each plug location. As such, I've never seen ANY of them fail...yet. Can't yet (first cuppa joe) imagine a scenario where you goofed up on the oil change, as you probably put in around 5 qts, and even goofing with 4-6 qts won't cause a problem. There's no vacuum at the cap, so a loose cap is not a culprit here, BT. So give us the scanned codes. If innocuous I'd then get to Subaru, don't bother to talk about the oil change, and have the CVT checked, as others have recommended.
