The AC evaporator is the small 'radiator' inside the dash/HVAC box. It doesn't often get damaged, but it can develop a leak due to age. (although this is still a rare occurrence.) If it's leaking you may smell refrigerant, or see an oily mist on the inside of the windshield when air is on. If, on the other hand, you were talking about the large AC condenser at the front of the car, sandwiched next to the radiator, that can often get damaged, by road debris or front end collision damage.
