On the readout for what gear the car is in there is a m or a v next to the gear the car is in, what do the v and m stand for

You sure its an M and V? and not M and A? Usually you will have an M or A displayed on the instrument cluster next to the gear that the car is selected dependinmg on if the driver has the gearbox mode in Manual shift or Automatic. You can override the Automatic function by pulling a gear on the steering wheel and that often throws up a small A/M together. Is this what you are referring too?
