I can remove the key when my 2014 edge is in drive. Therefore I have forgotten to put it in park and the battery has died. This seems like a design fault. .

Just leaving the car in drive, but shut off, will not drain your battery unless you have left on some other accessory. I would take the car to a dealer to fix the key removal issue (you should not be able to remove the key unless the car is in PARK. Then look for why you had a dead battery. Did you leave the interior lights on?
