Troubleshooting 1995 Ford Escort cuts off driving and in park

Will it continue to run in park if you give it a little gas? Does it run ok other than going dead when you slow down to stop? If yes to one or both it's probably a dirty/faulty idle air control valve or dirty throttle plate. May also be a vacuum leak or egr valve sticking open.
