I am guessing your Escape has the Eco-boost engine. Being turbo charged these will use lots of fuel if you drive with other than a light foot on the throttle. Also check the tire pressure as this will also have a large effect on fuel mileage. If it seems like the brakes are dragging when you take off from a stop, have the brake system checked out. It may still be under warranty. For what it's worth...my son has a 2013 Escape AWD and he loves it.
