Subaru Outback 2.0 diesel big ends ?

Subaru Outback 2.0 diesel boxer TD 2012, ~160k miles. Engine quite suddenly started making a load clacking noise which appears to come from behind the alternator.  I've been told it is the big ends shot.  Although it rises and falls with the rpm the frequency seems too low.  Could it be anything else ?

If you have a rod bearing knock it is time to rebuild the engine.
