4wheel drive won't stay engaged

my explorer won't always stay in 4 wheel drive auto ,sometimes just going a short distance 4 wheel drive auto and low lights flash 6 times and then go out, if i leave switch turned on, sometimes light comes back on, sometimes not

Hello, I would guess that this is either a problem with the transfer case or with the motor that engages the four wheel drive. I would recommend bringing to a mechanic for an absolute diagnosis. Best of luck! CarGrrl
