Wire color for continous 12v

Asked by Brent Jan 14, 2016 at 07:16 PM about the 2011 Ford F-450 Super Duty

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi all, I'm installing tracking modules for my company's fleet and everything's been going pretty smoothly up until I got to our boom truck. It's a 2011 F-450 Super Duty. The wiring lists I've looked at reference wire color codes that don't exist and the GPS vendor hasn't been too much help either. I know that the ignition wire is white with an orange stripe, but their list references a non-existent Green/Red wire for the battery source. Their support representative said there should be a red wire, but I'm still not seeing anything of the sort. Does anybody know what the color code should actually be or where I can safely tap into for battery power?

I don't know the wiring color codes, but are you using a test light checking for power leads? It may help.

Look for an auxiliary hot wire at the battery. You can always run a new hot to the battery along with an inline fuse. Check the fuse box with a volt meter to see if any circuits remain hot with the ignition off. There usually are some extra empty slots available.
