Find someone who has a spray bottle of "ether" or "carb cleaner" and spray a little on the shaft of a screw driver near the handle. Then let the small amount of either drip down the shaft into the area around the button to clear the "sticky" material clear. It might take a while and do not just use the spray inside the car as the smell can be over powering even days later. Once open remove the button and clean it completely. Don't use anything like Windex because it will evaporate before it can clean the foreign material off the button.
