Great Question, seeing that the gasoline used in the EPA fuel economy tests is 96 octane with no ethanol. In the real world it is 87 octane with perhaps 10% ethanol. The 96 octane fuel in this engine produces a higher mileage figure because very liitle mixture is needed at higher loads and temperatures to avoid detonation. In the real world with 87,89,91octane fuel, more fuel is needed to prevent detonation. That is where the 105 octane E85 closes the gap on gasoline. The real mileage difference is about 10%.

Sorry, that should read "very little mixture ENRICHMENT is needed at higher loads and temperatures to avoid detonation".
