Is there something I can check when the "malfunction" light comes on? It is steady on not flashing.

code reader is like 20 bucks--- http://www.obdreaders.com/OBD+Readers/ The usual codes are because the gas cap is loose, or missing...the fuel has been filled to the cap, filling up the charcoal canister disabling the evaporative emissions control because you did not stop at one click but insisted on "topping it off" causing this problem-....an 02 sensor could be failing to send a signal, perhaps there are three on there- any number of sensors TPS MAF MAP EGR PVC...you could narrow it down by simply spending the 20 bucks for the scanner~

I am beginning to think there is some serious problems with the Ram 1500. we have sure gotten lots and LOTS of questions re: them as of late. Does this actually spell out 'malfunction? On the instrument cluster? No specific symbols, like an air bag, or a little engine? or something tat looks like : (0) that's brakes, an oil can with a drop on the spout? The answer is yes, there is something you can do. Go to a large parts store, like AutoZone or the like, and ask them to scan your OBD codes. they will do it free. Write down the codes and bring them back here. "malfunction" is simply too vague.

I type so slow you got that in while I was hunt and pecking, but Thompson the Judge is 100% right on target
