What causes my 1997 Ford Taurus to sounds like its in Neutral after stopping?

When I stop and then try to go it sounds like my car is in neutral (1997 Ford Taurus).  
What causes this to happen?

Please, what was the answer for this question? My Ford Taurus 1997 has the same problem. Tranny was rebuild but problem lingers on.
