Is it true that if the check engine light is on its because of the gas cap

Yes the check engine light will come on because of improper gas cap fit.

Matter of fact that's the #1 reason a CEL will light up. But , it's not the ONLY reason that will light it

Good suggestion Jim. I agree, could prevent something from getting worse = more expensive

How the heck does Chrysler pin-point gas cap, when it's a leak in the EVAP somewhere, but what about, say, a hole in the vapor recovery tube?

No it doesn't....at least on 99 Chrysler Sebring but first check gas cap ...take off and put back on until it clicks at least twice......will take up to 10 starts to clear CEL If u take to dealer or a shop they will most likely do this then reset computer and charge u 60+ $
