If the timing belt breaks does it ruin the engine?

1995 civic 1.6 ohc vtec , yes it's "J" made
4 door 5th Gen civic with similar engine ,
was ordered that way .think the timing
belt broke does that mean the engine is
shot?

It depends on weather it is an interference engine or not

If one of the valves was open (intake or exhaust valve) when the belt broke it is a possibility that the piston bent a valve.
