Depends on what is wrong with the cylinder. Sometimes a valve job will fix it other times it requires a complete overhaul. Do a dry and then a wet compression test to see what cylinder is dead and how much the two compression readings vary on the rest of the cylinders, if the readings jump way up on the wet test then the rings or even the block is badly worn and needs replaced. Or have a shop do a leak down test and that will confirm either base engine or just top end. Good luck.
