What could cause the motor mounts, bearing mounts to break after only 85K miles?

Our van was slipping, took it in to the service shop and they said the motor mounts, bearing mounts (4 of them) were broken.  They fixed those at a cost of around $1K, but the problem was still not fixed.  Now they are replacing the transmission (free) but could that have caused the mounts to break?

There are a lot of reasons that the motor mounts could break. The most common reasons are because of unusual stress or strain on the bearings, also it could be caused by contamination from an oil leak.

Hey coconut. It's unlikely they failed simultaneously. More than likely one failed for whatever reason (bad mount, over tightened, etc.) and the engine bucking did the rest. The shifting of your engine then of course created issues with your tranny (perhaps a leak from the point where the tranny joins with the engine that led to the slippage and damage). It's more likely that the broken mounts did the damage to the tranny than the other way around. It's more interesting that they did the tranny for free but not the mounts, but ... You shouldn't have any trouble with the mounts going forward but keep your paperwork where you can find it in case you do. Good luck.

I also have a 2002 Odyssey with failed motor mounts. I first had the problem over a year ago (noise during cold start) and they said it was the transmission and replaced that (insurance paid). That didn't fix the problem so now they say it's the motor mounts. The car has 72k miles and luckily I have an extended warranty. Now I wonder if there was a manufacturing defect with this model year since you have the problem too.

I have the same problems with my 2000 odyssey...i replaced motor mounts at 49k miles. I wonder how can this be after just 49k from the last time they were replaced. EW

We are in the process of replacing our 2006 Odyssey which has over 225,000 miles. We had the transmission replaced in 2018. In January 2020, we had to replace the key because it wasn't turning. We did not get a key with a remote so I have one key to unlock the door and another for the ignition. In February, two tires had to be replaced. One the result of a flat; the other just wearing out. We spent over $3,000 since January and that included engine (motor) mounts. The motor mounts were replaced in 2016 and again in August of 2020. The mechanics told my husband that the motor mounts had to be replaced because I was making fast start and stops. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I ALWAYS GRADUALLY STOP OR START. The only time I MIGHT have to stop would be if someone pulled in front of me quickly in traffic. I'm going to show my husband printouts from this site. I liked the 2006 Odyssey because the windows in the second row rolled down and they didn't on Chrysler products. Having windows that roll down is important to me because I travel with dogs. I had wanted to get a Chrysler Town & Country because of the folding middle seats, but they don't make that any more. I want to get a Pacifica. I don't like having to take seats out whenever I have to put dog crates in the car and I have traveled with four collies so it's necessary to take the seats out to make room for crates and other dog show equipment.
