grinding noise when pushing on gas then lost all power

Asked by Katie Jun 11, 2019 at 10:43 PM about the 1999 Ford Escort

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 ford escort was making an awful grinding type noise that would get worse when pushing on the gas. Almost as soon as i noticed this, i started losing speed even though i was pushing on the gas and then about 15 to 20 seconds later all power was lost. I coasted to the shoulder and then saw smoke coming from under the hood. Now when i try to start it it tries to turn over but starter wont engage and just grinds.
There is nothing obvious that is wrong or broken,  it has plenty of oil and water, and it didnt overheat.
Any thoughts?

I had a similar issue on a 93 Buick. Thing wouldnt go over 35 and i was on the damn highway none the less and it would randomly shut off. I recomment checking the fuel pump.
