2000 ford explorer stalls when the RPMs go under 200

Asked by Lacey Jan 22, 2019 at 03:58 PM about the 2000 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a 2000 Ford Explorer. Our other car crapped out and we
are tight on money. Found this for $400 because the guy said it's just been
sitting in his driveway for 2 years. He explained something was wrong,
perhaps the fuel pump? Anyway, it has a rough time starting up. I will put it
into reverse and it dies. If I get it above 200 RPMs it can make it into drive,
but the RPMs drop really fast. Once I do eventually get it out of the drive
way, when the RPMs drop at a stop sign or red light, the stupid thing stalls
and then it gets harder to restart. I'm not the best with cars. My boyfriends
dad thinks it might be some O ring thing? I've got guy friends who could help
if I found the parts and the possible reason. I'm just looking around for the
cheapest resolution!

Low idle, dying in gear.. not a fuel pump... start by scrubbing the throttle body out really good where the throttle blade closes

Several things come to mind, especially if the car has been sitting for 2 years. Fuel pump is a possibility but I would try cheaper things first. How are the spark plugs? Take them out and clean/gap them or just get new. Ignition parts like distributor cap and rotor (if so equipped), stale fuel (add cleaner at next fill-up), oh, and any indicator lights on like "Check Engine"? If so, have error codes read and resolved. Then move on to more expensive stuff like fuel pump and catalytic converter (clogging). Good luck. I hope some of your friends can assist you.

Also i dnt know if this vehicle has a mass air flow sensor but that can be a factor as well, if its really contaminated
