Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I was told today that the loud banging from the rear of my car is the transfer box and
to replace it with a used one with 12 month warranty would cost me $1,400.  Is this
reasonable???  Am I being taken for a ride???

Depends. What are you purchasing? A rebuilt case or a remanufacturered case. There is a difference. Personally I do not purchase rebuil anything. Most often when something is rebuilt it means the item was repaired up to its failure. Remanufacturing is a total different process. A remanufactured case from a reputable company should cost about a thousand bucks. They are not hard to install so the additional 400 bucks for the install seems a bit high. If your estimate is at a dealership, get an estimate from a good repair shop. It will be less.
