I'm told that if I disconnect the battery it affects the onboard computer and the car won';s start necessitating a tow to the dealer to re-set the computer. Is this true and is there a way around it?

the only thing that you are going to lose is radio station memory. But if you want to be safe connect jumpers on your car terminals when you disconect the battery.Anyway whatever you do the car is going to start.
