my sister in laws 2000 grand caravans transmission stopped working. the engine runs fine until you put it in any gear then the engine starts smoking and sputtering. van doesn't move.

also it appears someone trying to help her with the problem has added too
much transmission fluid.

Too much transmission fluid can damage a transmission. I would remove the excess fluid with a suction gun.
