thermostat blinks on and off?

the thermostat doesn't blink on and off is the engine light blink on and off

It is the heat light that looks like the icon under the heat gauge not the engine light the heat gauge stays about half way does not appear to be actually over heating. We've never change the thermostat that is why I'm thinking it may be the thermostat.
