How do I fix my CD Player?

Asked by CTeener77 Dec 06, 2013 at 01:33 PM about the 2001 Ford Focus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Ford Focus hatchback. When I try and feed a CD into the CD player it doesn't feed right or read it. Sometimes I have to stick another CD partially into the slot to make the other one fit into place and play. Sometimes I have to do the same thing to get the CD back out. Do I need a whole new CD player to fix this? Are they hard to take out and install new ones?

Sometimes you can get lucky and try some canned air (like what you use to clean the dust out of your keyboard on a computer) and liberally spray it into the slot where your CD's go in. Be sure to keep the can upright when you do that! Sometimes they just get dusty/dirty in there and that will do the trick to clean it out. If that doesn't help you'll most likely need a new CD player. They're inexpensive (usually about $100) and typically have USB or aux inputs on the newer units as well which work really nicely with iPods and smart phones. Stick with a good radio brand (like Alpine) if you're planning on keeping the car a while - you'll notice a difference! BestBuy or any reputable electronics retailler usually does a decent job of installing car stereos, or if you want to save a little cash and try it yourself go to www.crutchfield.com (I don't work for them!) and they'll send you a radio, the instalation kit, and all the do-it-yourself tips printed out for your specific car. I've used them several times for different components and it's worked really well. Good luck!
