This site will tell you how to locate the spark plugs on the 01 Expedition http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/How_do_you_locate_the_spark_plugs_on_a_2001_Ford_Expedition Ford does have a history of spark plug problems (although they completely deny it) in the the Expedition and F-truck series. A class action lawsuit was filed in California urging Federal Officals to force Ford to recall about 17 million vehicles because of the spark plug defect.

When changing the spark plugs you will need to buy the special tool to do this, the sparkplugs are hard to get in there and very easy to cross thread. My husband and I are very big Ford fans, but the spark plug problem you mentioned just happened to us. We are very disappointed that Ford will not take care of this. It took everything we had to get this truck and now it has yet to be fixed(almost done). So be very careful and don't force it. Good Luck!

The spark plugs are located on top of the engine down inside the head. They have what is called a coil on plug setup. There are no spark plug wires. The coil sets right on top of the spark plug and it goes down inside the head and is each one is held on by a 9/32-7mm bolt. There are 4 per side.

My exped had this same problem (twice). fortunately if your truck is out of warrenty ford has APPROVED Heli-coiling the head if the spark plugs get stripped out. but there is no reason (according to ford) that the sparkplugs should be changed before 120,000 miles. so if you change your plugs yourself under warrenty, too-bad so-sad, pony up the cash.

Has there been any progress on the class action lawsuit? Has anyone went after the dealer that sold you the vehicle. I personally want someone's head on a stick!!!!!!!! No wonder the US Auto Industry is a mess. GO GERMANY AND JAPAN!!!!!!!!!

I have found that when you change the plugs use some di electirc grease the stuff the autoparts store trys to seel you in a little pouch put some of the stuff on the outside an the inside. also found the other thing that I do not like is dont wash the engine. the 5.4l triton has the plugs on a vertical set that water getts in there an fools out the plugs quicker than norm.

First do you have coils, or sparkplug wirers,...and in both cases start by removing all plastic covering, guards and air intake starting from the motor....just take what you need to clear space for your self...this is all this is for. #1 if you have spark plug wirers follow each one (one) at a time back to the motor or block, NOTE:...wen you start to pull the wirers out..if you dont need to change them some times they get stuck from long time on there so watch you dont snap the wire or the prongs inside and , YOU GO ONE BY ONE TILL YOURE DONE---- DONT PULL THEM ALL OUT AT ONECE UNLES U MARK THEM.....PS the clips that hold the wirers ARE A BICH..and way to many if you aske me.. #2. if you have coils they sit right over top of the spark plugs underneath the fuel rails that feed the injectors(crome shiny 1/4" inch metal bars along both sides of the block (there are 8 individual coils/ 1 for each cylinder) yes you will have to loosen the rails and all the conections to both --the injectors and the coils have specila hard plastic conectors just separete to get to the ones in the back on ech side Or if you got big hands all of them... is tight in there, specially the passenger side with the heater core hoses-- DONT SNAP THOSE--

the thread repair kits work great. Used them quite a few times. I do recommend buying a repair kit that offers you vacuum attachments and all taps and inserts you will need. These kits are not cheap so you may want to shop around. Lisle is one company i would recommend. The one i use is from Snap On tools. Good luck.

IVE BEEN TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT AUTO REPAIR SHOPS THAT ITS EVEN A COMMON THING TO HAVE THE PLUGS BLOW. THAT IF THAT STARTS HAPPENING YOU NEED TO PUT PERMANENT PLUGS IN BECAUSE OTHERWISE IT WILL KEEP HAPPENING. YOU MIGHT WANT TO START FOR A NEW RIDE
