Car won't shift

Asked by Jonlindsey2009 May 23, 2017 at 03:03 PM about the 2001 Ford Escape

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 01 ford escape shows that it is in neutral, but
the shifter is all the way up in the park position.
The shifter won't move. The car starts just fine but
it's like the shifter is stuck.

On my 2004 Ford Escape I fixed a similar issue. Car wouldn't shift out of park. It has to do with the communication between the shift and the brake pedal. Bad Fuse maybe . But There is a bypass just for the shift. It's a little switch you press down on my car. If you take off the plastic cover on top of the steering stick not the wheel you can see it on top. There s also a small square on the plastic you pry off to get to it. On other years apparently this is on the bottom and is more of a tiny button. In any case, put on the parking brake start the car press the lever and simultaneously shift out of park. Then figure out why this happen but at least you can drive to the garage or othe buy fuses in my case.
