Why does my 2000 Honda civic turn off when braking

Its a civic dx with manual transmission.
check engine light turned on a few weeks
ago then shortly after it started to sound
like it's gonna turn off when I'd first start it
up but it'd stay on. Car doesnt have a
problem starting up. It's also spewing out
white smoke from the tailpipe
