My friend has a cadillac with a north star engine. He put a brand new water pump in it and took the thermostat out and it still gets to red quick. Could it be the thermostat or it be clogged somewhere

Put the thermostat back in. The coolant is not staying in the radiator long enough to dissipate heat ...but it could be clogged. Take the cap off cold and start, without thermostat you don't even have to wait for it to warm up and watch coolant flow. If coolant backs up and comes out the top, it's clogged, or if you see a lot of circulation, then back to not staying in long enough

Have to see what happens with that first. If you see bubbles in the coolant, (come back and we can address that) whether it flows through radiator or back up clogged
