Coolant needed for North Star engine?

Asked by GuruFBTQ4 Apr 21, 2020 at 03:12 PM about the 1997 Cadillac DeVille

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Will running a 1997 northstar with only
water for coolant (no antifreeze) cause the
engine to overheat? Which coolant is
needed for engine?

1 Answer

Water alone would probably not cause it to overheat but you should not do this without a corrosion inhibitor additive. If your Northstar is over heating there is a good chance the head bolts are coming loose. This is a very expensive fix.
