I have a 1999 and just changed the timing belt..The water pump is in the middle of the timing belt but not connected to it..easy to change water pump it just has a o ring that comes with it..it is turned by the serpentene belt not the timing belt..To chance the timing belt you need a tool kit that has 2 cam shaft locks, crank lock ..this is a interference engine and if you wait until the belt breaks you will probably bend the valves and have a big problem..you should change the timing belt and idle pullys water pump, and tensioner pully as well,,you can buy it all on ebay for about 150.00..the belt i bought had directions on how to change it if you decide to do it yourself..make sure all timing marks are exactly lined up after belt is on..turn engine at the crank by hand using wrench 2 or 3 times and make sure timing marks stay lined up..direcitons will tell you what you need to know follow them carefuly and you can do it... Toney...
