Transmission or speed sensor?

Asked by Barbara Dec 30, 2016 at 02:09 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. O/D light started flashing and Rams hit 3000 but
it wouldn't go over 40. Made a crazy noise   Code 733. After the code was
cleared its driving fine hitting up to 80 km   If it was the transmission could it
possibly fix like this or could it be the speed sensor

The code 733 indicates the PCM is detecting RPM difference between the input and output sensors for the transmission. If the fault is at the transmission the problem could be internal to the transmission, meaning it would be beyond your ability to repair. It should also be caused by a defective coolant temp sensor or the transmission is in need of a fluid and filter change. Has the transmission ever been serviced? The coolant temp sensor you can change and it is not expensive. If the vehicle has a tranny dip stick you can change your own fluid and filter, though it is a bit messy. If there is no dip stick, then have the filter and oil changed at a lube shop as the new fluid has to be pumped into the tranny.
