Could be a bad spark plug wires or the ignition coil. You will need a multi meter to check resistance on the wires and coil. Check the resistance on both the primary and secondary coil along with power being supplied to all three sections of the coil if it is a V6.

Thank You.... the Spark plug wires are new. ... So maybe we will go with the coil it is in cyl. 3 & 4 plugs are new ... it had a tune up and ran great then the 19 year old plowed it to a curb in all the snow we are having and then it started miss firing and sucking tons of gas, could it be a head, or head gasket ? I hope not... would be easier if it was just a couple of wire a just a coil... thanks

If you look at your coil there are three rows, two plug wide = 6 plug wires. The misfire you are experiencing in cylinders 3 and 4 represent the back two plug wires with the position for the # 1 plug wire for cylinder # 1 (bottom left of engine) being either on the bottom left of the coil or the top left, depending if the coil is situated horizontal or vertical. Each coil is divided up in pairs controlling two cylinders. In your instance the paired coils are 1-5, 2-6, and 3-4. Since cylinders 3 and 4 are experiencing the problem I suspect a problem with the coil. Cylinders three and four on the engine translates to the back cylinder on the left (3) and the front cylinder on right (4). The gasket would have to have gone out on both sides of the engine at the same time, doubtful. Checking the coil with a digital multimeter is not difficult. The net should indicate the specs.

Thank you, OJ... sounds like the thing to do is check and test the coil. Really like the way you analyzed this very nice help.

My 2002 light came on driving on the highway. Meter said 1 2 and 3 were missing. Changed the plus wires coil pack. And fuel filter. Didn't work. Still the same. Changed o2 senser for 1 2 3 side, upflow. Still runs like crap. I don't want to do a complete over hall. Any ideas?
