Escort van no lights on dash and won't start the battery was loose resulting in it breaking a earthcable re - attached it  but nothing

Check related fuses the earth cable might have caused a burnt FUSE also check battery (depleted) for voltage 12.6 volts and other cables might be loose or corroded also.

My guess is that your ground is not properly made . Make sure you have a good ground and check for continuity with a tester.
