How can I make my 1984 Grand Marquis' 302 sound like a V8?

Question type: Car Customization

My 1984 Grand Marquis runs just fine, but its 302 V8 sounds like a V6 with the OEM muffler.

As soon as the old unit croaks, I'd like to install a muffler that at least brings out that typical V8 sound. Nothing aggressive, mind you, that would be out of character for a mild boulevard cruiser like the Merc, but something with a distinctive, easily recognizable V8 exhaust note, a rich, mellow throb.

Parts stores list only the omnipresent Walker mufflers, but they'll probably sound just like the one in the car now.

What can I do? Ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

Look at mufflers for the Mercury Marauder. It was a bad ass version of the Grand Marquis with dual exhaust. Either that or get Flow Masters that have the same size inlet n outlet as the factory ones for your Marquis

People have also been using glass pack mufflers for over 40 years.

Glass pack mufflers are great if you like a extremely loud exhaust that will get you noticed by the police, piss off your neighbors and want to replace them every year or so then by all means put those on, LOL.

James is right. Like anything custom on a car it just all depends how much money you want to spend.
