what does it mean when the brake light and battery light stays on

..insufficient voltage to work properly. Check your battery voltage not- running (12.5 - 13.5) volts and running 14.5 volts~ most likely a new alternator is required here~

...a battery more than seven years old will not charge up properly, this could be what baked your alternator working overtime~....get a new one~
