What's the biggest engine I can put in a 75 mercury comet?

I just got a 75' mercury comet and I'm being told the
biggest engine I can put in it is a 302L and I'm
wondering if this is correct

A 351 Windsor should fit. You would have to do some measuring to see if a FE, Cleveland or 385 series engine would fit.
