What caused my engine to seize on a 2004 ford explorer?

Asked by Question365 Apr 07, 2018 at 10:08 AM about the 2004 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

As I was driving there was a loud knocking sound
coming from under the truck... grew louder and
faster as I accelerated. Then it got even louder
followed by a loud pop that sounded like an
explosion under the vehicle and then it
stalled/seized. I turn key, it has battery power, but
won't even crank.

The engine is blown, period. You'll need another one. Is it a 4.0 V6? If so and you decide to replace the engine make sure you get one specifically for the 2003 model year. The 4.0 engine was used for many years. There were probably a dozen or so modifications made to the engine over the course of it's use. Internal parts of those engines are not always interchangeable. Any repairs down the road could give a mechanic fits if he believes he's working on a 2004 engine when it is not.
