My 2004 ford escape will only crank if i turn the key on and off about 10 times. You can hear the fuel pump turn on for 2 seconds each time you turn it on. Any thoughts as to what is wrong?

I found the button that releases it on top of the steering wheel. But, after shutting the engine off and then restarting the car, the shifter is stuck again.

Does a 2005 ford escape have a sensor for the shift button? Could the fuse be a possible problem for the truck not driving right or shifting correctly on a 2005 ford escape?
